Urban Beehive

This Urban Beehive is a futuristic concept for keeping bees anywhere you may live. It was created by designers Clive van Heerden and Jack Mama who are part of the Philips design team.

The design was created so that bees are attracted to the flowers in the pot which is kept on the outside of the house. They pollinate and then make their way inside the beehive where they make the honey. Smoke can be released into the hive after a while, thus driving the bees out and allowing the owner to collect the honey.

This was created as an unconventional yet appealing way to pollinate urban areas. It also allows for honey to be made and used in an urban environment.

I really enjoy this idea and would love to get my hands on one of these Urban Beehives! I have always wanted to keep bees, but thought it was out of my reach because I live in the city.

Colored rooms

I go back and forth between loving color on the walls, or just enjoying plain simple white. Today I am loving color. It's another dreary rainy fall day in DC, so I'll take any color I can get! I love the orange dining room above. Orange is not normally a color that I like, but on those walls with the windows to break it up I think it looks fantastic! Our living room was that color when we moved into our rowhouse and it had a very different affect. It was so intense and dramatic that we didn't even want to be in that room. I could definitely eat a meal or sip a coffee in the room above though.

I also enjoy the turquoise bathroom. Turquoise is one of my favorite colors (thus the blog name) so I enjoy seeing the color pretty much anywhere. I am a huge fan of it on walls though. Our bedroom is painted this same color of turquoise and I can't get enough! I like it in the bathroom with the white and the mirror. I especially love the tub in that bathroom!

Dior Couture by Patrick Demarchelier

Here is a little Dior Couture for you by Patrick Demarchelier. I have always loved haute couture for its creativity and inventiveness. I think if I were to attend any fashion show it would be that of a haute couture designer. Oh the silhouettes, colors, layers, and accessories. I love it all!

Ankle Boots

I find that I go through shoe obsessions. I'm sure this happens to most women. When it happens to me though, I find myself walking the streets with my face turned down just to find the current shoe that I am obsessing over. Then when I find it, a feeling of pride and excitement comes over me...unless of course the girl is wearing the shoe all wrong. And by 'all wrong' I mean my own meekly personal opinion of what does not look good. Like I said, it's an obsession phase. It happens with clothes too. So if you can't tell, my current obsession is the ankle boot. I think they are so cute and streamlined-looking on the foot. I just want to clap my hands and jump up and down when I see these shoes. I have yet to decide on which lucky ankle boots will go home with me...I'm thinking the teal one's above may be the winners.

Happy Thanksgiving

(source)

(source)

In sticking with old photo Thursday, here are some old Thanksgiving photos to look at after the big meal. I love the colors in the bottom photo of the 1950s family getting ready to eat. I love the fact that even though so much time has passed since these photos, the food hasn't changed. We still eat the same things on Thanksgiving, except maybe our portions are larger now. Traditions are fun!

Nail Art

It seems that I see painted nails more and more. Not only are there colors like charcoal, taupe, and fluorescent green, but now there are designs. I have seen flowers, polka dots, animal prints and so many other fun things. I love the nail art inspirations above. There are some talented people out there to be able to recreate these things on their nails. If my nails weren't so small I'd try something myself. For now I will just stick with some favorite colors like red and taupe.

Baggu!

I love Baggu, I just have to say it! I keep one of these in my purse (sometimes two) at all times. You never know when you'll need a bag handy, and these things fold up so small. I have saved myself on many last minute grocery trips with these things. Especially since they charge for bags in DC! We have a lot of those reusable bags that you can buy in the grocery store for $2, but they wear out so fast and you can't wash them or they will disintegrate. These are washable and super durable. I am not being compensated by Baggu for this post, I just love them this much!

Into the future

Check out this little film of what the future will be like. It was put out by Microsoft so it is quite heavy on the technology. It is a bit long to watch, about 6 minutes, but definitely interesting. Technology is really incredible!

8000 nerves

I found a new clothing line called 8000 Nerves. These clothes are very organic looking yet fashionable at the same time. I always enjoy finding new artists, architects, and clothing lines. They refresh my creativity pallet, and excite me! This particular clothing line is pretty new, about a year old. It was created by two sisters wanting to empower women with their clothing. They did a good job because now Urban Outfitters has 8000 Nerves in their stores and online. Go ladies, way to get your dream imagined.

7 Foods Experts Won't Eat

Check out this article: 7 Foods Experts Won't Eat. It is pretty crazy to read about the seven foods. They are not foods that I would have expected to be on the list. I do trust the experts though (for the most part), especially since they have done all of the scientific research to show the proof of why we shouldn't be eating these foods. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by these articles talking about how bad we are to the food we grow and our environment. This article is definitely worth reading though!!

Polka Dots!

Polka dots, they are everywhere these days! I see someone wearing some form of polka dots almost every day. I am a huge fan of those little round dots on bathing suits; in fact I am guilty of buying not one, but two polka dot bathing suits this last summer. I just can't get enough. Unfortunately I don't own any polka dot clothing for fear that it will be too much on the eyes. I think you can do polka dots in a subtle enough way though that you aren't too bam! in anyone's face. Gotta love the dots!

Old Photo Thursday

When I found this photograph the title was "Unknown". The date is unknown, the people are unknown, the location is unknown. To the two love birds in the picture this was a big day. They were obviously in love and very happy to have this picture taken. The image is remembered, but not the people or the time. Thus is the story behind most of these old photographs. I love the mystery, and somehow it is almost romantic.

Mario Pignotti

500px / Photo "Yellow umbrella" by mario pignotti

(source)

Blaa, another rainy, wet day here in DC. This is by far the wettest fall that I think we've ever had. You'd think we were in Seattle or something. Anyway enough of my grunting and groaning, go check out Mario Pignotti's stuff. He has some phenomenal black and white photography. He does some really contrasty nitty gritty stuff where the photo really pops
out and says something.

Thanksgiving Reconstructed

This is such a genius reconstructed Thanksgiving meal idea that I have to share. It comes from the blog: fĂȘtette. They give recipes and instructions on how to create such a creative Thanksgiving-like meal, but with a twist and a little bit of class. I love it!

Ravine House

(source)

So you wanna buy some land, but it's all expensive...solution, buy land in a ravine! Ravine land is far less expensive because normally there is less you can build on it. Gaeta Springall Architects came up with a very creative and modern house to build in this ravine. Not only is there space for it, but it is a stunning beauty.

Natsumi Hayashi

(source)

Natsumi Hayashi is a simple, yet very creative photographer. She takes these pictures of herself levitating in different places. Most of her pictures are taken with the camera's self-timer, so she has to set the camera up, focus it, then run and guess when she should jump so that she gets the perfect looking levitation picture. Sometimes she has to do this over and over. I think it would be hilarious to watch her do that. Luckily we as the viewers get to see the best part, the final perfected image of levitation. These pictures will mess with your head!

100 YEARS of style

A pretty cool video showing the last 100 years of style. (1911 - 2011) This was put out by East London clothing company and is really great!

Boot love!

Oh I am in love with a boot! I have been on the forever boot search and these are the winners. Tis the season for boots, and not only are they everywhere on the streets, but they are in all the stores. Unfortunately I can never find a good quality boot made out of real leather. What is the point of buying a synthetically made boot if it's just going to fall apart on you by the end of the season?! My husband has instilled this 'buy nice, or buy twice' attitude in me. I don't use it for everything, but for things like good boots I think its a good way to be. Unfortunately the price tag for these babies is $445...time to start saving.

Old Photo Thursday

This is a photo of Mary Feeney sometime around 1930. The location is Montgomery County MD, and the activity is car sitting. Usually the photos that I find only have a date to them. This photo had a name though, how exciting! I also enjoy the fact that the photo was taken in Montgomery County MD, which is just outside of DC. It is known to be one of the wealthier counties in the area, and I'm guessing it was that way back then too. I love her dress and the casual relaxed look she is giving the camera.

Stainless Steel Soap?

I stumbled upon stainless steel soap a few weeks ago and have since forgotten about it until today. I saw the picture on my computer and could not figure out why I had saved it. So I introduce you to stainless steel soap. Strange eh? I love strange things, and this is one strange thing that I think my husband would especially enjoy. This bar of soap is just a round chunk of smooth stainless steel. You take it with you in into the shower and use it like a soap bar. It doesn't lather you up, but somehow the properties in it will remove odors, germs, and debris. Now I can't attest to this for real because I haven't tried it, but it is an interesting concept. Stocking stuffer for Christmas? Most likely.

3D Street Art

These 3D street art pictures always get me! I just can't get over how real, yet how fake they are. They really mess with my head. Luckily I've only ever seen them online (I grabbed this picture from Facebook), because if I saw one in person it would really trip me out. There are some incredibly talented chalk artists out there!

cold weather, warm weather and boots

Well now that the lovely cold weather of fall has hit all I can do is think about spring. I have my good days and bad days with the weather. Sometimes I bask in the coolness of fall wearing cute coats and pants. Then there are days like today when I wish it was summer again so that I could wear a cute number like above. No matter summer or fall I love her boots! Those are versatile boots and I want them! I have been on a boot hunt lately and have had zero luck finding something I like. More about that later though...

Old Photo Thursday

Now this is an interesting photograph. It seems as though the small child is in this birds nest. I would love to know what was going on when this photo was taken. I enjoy the photograph, but at the same time it is also eerily strange.

Coffee Table Fireplace

Just your common everyday coffee table fireplace. What, no! Is this fireplace even possible? I love the idea, but I feel like a lot could go wrong here. Either way, it is fun to look and I sort of wish I had one.

Comfortable Fall

I love this look. It says fall and comfortable in so many ways. It is dressed down, yet looks nice enough for a variety of places. This is the look that I am going for today with the chilly temperatures but sun shining. It is one of those fall days that I thoroughly enjoy!

Left brain vs. Right brain

This ad is gorgeous. I saw it on facebook and grabbed it. When I see something beautiful or genius I have to share it. An ad put out my Mercedes Benz, enjoy.

The text for the left brain reads:

“I am the left brain. I am a scientist. A mathematician. I love the familiar. I categorize. I am accurate. Linear. Analytical. Strategic. I am practical. Always in control. A master of words and language. Realistic. I calculate equations and play with numbers. I am order. I am logic. I know exactly who I am.”

And for the right brain:

“I am the right brain. I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion. Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter. I am taste. The feeling of sand beneath bare feat. I am movement. Vivid colors. I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas. I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel. I am everything I wanted to be.”
